If it is running alongside another filter 4 weeks is considered to be a good length of time to leave it. If however it is the only filter you will need to either cycle it (4+ weeks) or seed it with some media from another filter (-4 weeks if enough mature media is used).

i'll be running it along side another filter.
i would of thought 2 weeks was enough time, but i maybe wrong.

cheers

Four weeks is what is normally advised on here, the longer the better. I assume the other filter is mature? If you are removing the current filter once the new one is matured, you could just move all the media from the old one to the new then it would be instantly cycled.

the filter in my 30gallon has been running for about 2 years lol so quite mature. the new filter is for my breeding tank, which i could do with asap as my white clouds are ready for breeding. i cant really get media from my old filter because its been siliconed up as it was leaking and would be too much trouble to take apart

How do you plan on cleaning it out when it eventually clogs and stops working/get reduced flow? It will take 4 weeks 3 may do it but 4 to be on the safe side, I would say two is too short.

when i really need too i will take it apart and clean it up and silicone it back up, but its not essential for this filter

I would say 4 weeks to be safe, 3 maybe ok, but 2 is probably not long enough.

Sorry its not what you wanted to hear.
