Filter/pump

Hi all, i'm about to bid on a 40 gallon but it comes with holes drilled for a sump or external filter, since i've never used a sump or external filter the guy offered to put a piece of glass over the holes so that i could stick an internal filter in. What do you think is best and easiest, external or internal filter?

i personally use internal filters [cos I'm a student, and externals are hugely expensive when compared!]

read about the pro and cons, if you have enough money then external obviously look much nicer as they're outta the tank! leaving more room for the fish, and a pleasent decor.
