can an internal fluval 2 plus be positioned horizontal. i have done it and it doesnt affect the flow, just wondering if i shouldnt be doing it?

It should be fine but the flow indicator won't work right. To decide the filter is becoming plugged, the indicator uses gravity working against the flow from the pump. Since the gravity part won't be involved, the filter will show clean at all times. That just means you need to be more aware of how long it has been since last cleaning or you need to feel the flow coming from the filter.

If the filter is mounted vertically, the little yellow thing will show the red stripe behind it as the flow drops off. The idea is to be able to tell at a glance if the filter is starting to plug up. Laying on its side, it will always show the yellow.

the clogging indicator is infact spring loaded and works on the principle that when under pressure the water forces it up, but when the pressure drops(filter gets clogged) the spring forces the indicator down.

so it should work on its side and still show when pressure drops :good:
