hi i have just bought a 2nd hand Fluval FX5 which was used on a marine tank.

i am going to use it on a freshwater tank so how should i go about cleaning the media?

will it harm my fish if traces of salt remain?

thanks

adam

Their are bacteria and parasites that can live in salt water that could harm your fresh water. If I were you, I would replace all filter media and clean all parts of the filter with hot water. It is better to be safe than sorry. When you get done doing that (assuming you have another filter with mature media) you can "cloan" your current filter by putting mature media in the the Fluval.

Like what?

There are very few organisms that can move from SW to FW, especially with being dried out in between. Most treatments for parasites is to change the salinity (salt and salt baths for FW ich, hyposalinity or FW baths for marine ich).
