I am new to planting in my aquarium and noticed in some topics in this forum mentions that carbon inserts are not good for plants...why is that??? Are ammonia remover inserts bad too and is there other inserts i have to worry about? I have a aquaclear 70 power filter running with a sponge, ammonia remover and carbon inserts in my tank containing plants such as bacopa, anubias and java moss, all of them looking pretty good and growing wonderfully despite the carbon inserts and the no added ferts....

Carbon removes lots of 'impurities' from the tank water, many of which plants need to grow, the obvious one being iron.

I have to ask why you've got an ammonia remover in there? Unless you've had a crisis and have an ammonia spike you shouldn't need an ammonia or nitrite remove in the filter long term as the bacteria break it down for you.
