just a quick question, is the media in a tropical tank the same as coldwater, ie goldfish?

the reson i'm asking my friend has a gold fish tank that's playing up, and i have a 2ft tank sitting empty, and he might have this tank but would i be able to transfer the media over from mine?(which is a troical tank) or would the coldness of the water kill off all the good bacteria?

The answer is yes, it's the same. Although you are correct to have reservations about the temperature difference.

It would really depend on how different the temperatures are. To be on the safe side, i would acclimitise the media to the new temperature as you would do with a new fish. Maybe not necessary, but might save some fishes.

Good luck. :good:

When I setup my coldwater tank for my black moor during winter, I moved some of my filter pad out of my eheim and into the filter in the QT tank. Added 4 minnows and a large black moor, and its never had ammonia or nitrite readings, so I presume the answers yes. If it works in the other direction....I dont know. Thing is the coldwater tank pretty much follows room temp, so its not that different to my tropical tank really sometimes.
