Filter Media - Activated Carbon

I have read conflicting information regarding using Activated Carbon in a planted tank. Is it advisable to use this media in my filter. Also, if it is not advisable, would another media (such as Chemi-Pure) be acceptable.

Activated carbon will remove all ferts added to the water, so not so desirable in planted tanks.
