OK I accidentally left my HOB filter turned on during a water change. Now it does not work. I tried pouring some water into the filter to get it going with no luck. Is there something I can do to save the filter or did I destroy it?

It may well have burnt out, but try stripping the whole thing down, removing just the pump part and trying that in a bucket. Sometimes you just need to give it a really good shake to remove any air and clean around the impeller.

Make & model of filter would help. Often the impeller & recess it sits in needs a good cleaning, sometimes the impeller just needs a good nudge to start moving. If you have thin enough fingers that will work, or any thin object like a pen will if you have fat fingers like me.
