what size is the fry tank? You don't necessarily need to take the external off the sump. You could use what I call the "grow in cycle." Which works as follows...

Buy a small internal filter seed it in the main aquarium for a day - a week depending on circumstance and then add it to the fry tank. I have been using this method for years and never had an ammonia/nitrite spike. It's based on the premise that the bacs will grow in conjunction with the fry. It has worked on 40+ apisto fry to about 30 livebearer fry. Something like this >>ebay<< They are relatively cheap. In emergency cases I don't have time to seed the filter and it still turns out ok.

I got an interpet pf mini off amazon for £7 last week. Just so you know :)

I have one of those from Aps, I found the flow was too strong for my fry.
For fry a sponge filter is good, squeeze some of the gunk from your main filter into a bowl & give the sponge a good squeeze in the gunk, I found that worked well for fry, along with regular water changes

I use a sponge filter in my fry tank too! It's great, fry cant get sucked in. Even if you put something over a filter intake, the weaker ones could get stuck to it.

My sponge cost $3 on ebay.
