Hey all

I have just bought a second hand jewel corner tank and has a filter hung in the back corner and looking at the media in it.there is a white sock with something in it sitting on black media and was just wondering what it was and if it need to be replaced with new stuff

If it were me I'd buy all new filter media just to be sure.

Is it one of the standard Juwel filters glued to the side? Because I have one and there's nothing even remotely sock-like in it!!

There should be 2 filter baskets, the bottom one will contain 2 fine sponges, and the top one will contain 2 coarse sponges. Usually when you buy brand new one of those coarse sponges (the green one) is a nitrate removing sponge, and then there's usually a black thinner sponge on top of those (that;s the carbon sponge - I don't use that though), and then on top of that sits a even thinner pad of whilte filter wool, which you're supposed to replace every week.

Yep u were rite where would u bvy new ones and wot make model r they

It's a Juwel filter so that's the make. As far as I know, the filters come in standard size - about 28cms square, jumbo size - about 32cms square, and compact size - about 25cms square. (Those sizes are only approx)

You'll have to make sure you get the right size - best way would be to take a sponge in that you have and measure it against a new one to make sure they are the same! Your local fish shop should do them, but they might not do the right size, so it's important to know. I've made that mistake before!

If your local shop doesn't do them you can go to the juwel website and buy them direct from there, but I don;t know how much they are as I've never done that.

In my experience the carbon pads and the nitrate sponge are not really necessary - any nitrate in your water can be removed by regular water changes, and you only need a carbon pad if you've medicated your fish for something and need to remove the remains of the medication. But that's just me - if you want them in then go for it :)
