Filter For Jewel Bio Advice Please

Hi i am a new member and really need some advive. I have a jewel 180 tank that i bought second hand from a small shop about 3 moths ago, i set the tank up with evrything that was with the came with it, waited a week and added the fish from my old tank and along the way added some more that i have brought. About two weeks ago i began to lose fish and it has become a regular occurance. To my horror after checking on the internet i was missing some of the sponges and the cirax so i got what was needed an fitted the correct sponges in the correct order. This was done two days ago. i have been doing regular water changes. What i would like to know is how long before the filter starts to work properly? Any help would be appreciated.

secondly don't panic
thirdly read up on this more importantly about a fish-in-cycle, which is what you're currently doing.
How many fish, and what are we talking about?

edit:do you still have the old tank running? If so you can transfer some filter media across.
