Just to keep you posted, my experiment seems to have worked! (fingers crossed)
The first week I did 2x40% water changes and the ammonia still tested a little high....
The second week I tested my tap water and my tank to see if the ammonia was coming from the tap water....... and it was!
My tap water tested at 0.25! But my tank was back to 0!! SO I guess the plants and the filter bacteria are doing their jobs!
I did manage to chop up bits of the old filter and jam it into the very small cylinder where charcoal can go in the new filter. and the larger old filter sponge is still in the tank, near the flow of the new filter.......
In any case, ammonia is being processed and the fish seem happy!
