My filter is awfully noisy today. Vibration is coming from the top of the unit. I have taken it apart, rinsed the sponges and bag of carbon in tank water. Taken off the impeller and cleaned it with my fingers, put it back on. Reassembled the filter, and its just as bad. Its not the wire or the lid of the tank vibrating, its def the filter. Ive turned it upside down in the water whilst it was working to exclude air bubbles.

Although this noise only started today, I changed the filter media about 10 days ago. Because I couldnt get hold of an official sponge, I cut down two juwel ones (black and blue) and put them in. They were ever so slightly bigger, but I wanted to be sure there were no gaps. Is this my problem? Have I overloaded the filter case with sponge? No idea what to do now.

I hope someone can suggest something because the noise is driving me so crazy Im considering buying a new pump and its only been a day.

Your help is appreciated!

update
I had a high reading of nitrites AND the pump was so noisy I could hear it over the tv at the other end of the room, so I changed it for a clearseal 1100L, using some of the old media. I was given this as a spare with the tank. I know nothing about this filter, have no instructions and cant find any, but it just looks like a powerhead with a canister attached. It had coarse sponge, bio balls and filter wool in. I changed the wool, used the sponge from my old filter, and the bio balls and added a nylon bag of carbon. Any other ideas???

I was tempted to go out and buy a new fluval 3+ today but I resisted.

pLEASE PLEASE SOME SUGGESTIONS???

have you tried moving it around slightly, sounds like you have an airblock

I have moved it round and turned it upside down to try and dislodge possible air bubbles but it continued to run noisily.

Thanks for your reply anyway.

I seem to be getting on OK with the clearseal thingy its just that I have no instructions for it, so I hope I have loaded the media OK ... coarse sponge at the bottom then bio balls and carbon, then filter wool at top. I also hop that its the correct size for the tank and it is providing adequate filtration. I cant find one like it anywhere, but presume the 1100L on the label refers to 1100Litres. Would this be per hour?

The clearseal just stopped abruptly overnight and wont start again. I have gone back to the noisy Resun Magic Jet but have ordered another fluval which should come tomorrow.

I can see the sense in getting an external one, eventually!

Yup, externals are really, really nice. What size tank?

Sure sounds like you've got got some problem with the impeller, impeller shaft - something right in there - perhaps those are replaceable parts. Sounds like you've eliminated bubbles in there although they can really fool you sometimes.

I ended up buying a Fluval 3+ internal filter because it was a good buy and I cant afford an external one yet. I have used the old media. This is really quiet which is what I wanted plus the media is easy to change.

Do you all use the venturi effect on your filter? I like it because the fact that the increased water surface allows oxygenation seems good, also the sound is quite soothing.
