I've had my MM Platys for over 6 months and I've noticed in the past few weeks that the male doesn't look very healthy. Tonight I noticed the male and female fighting with their tails...at least that's what it looks like! I took a video so you can see what I'm talking about. Can anyone tell me why they are doing this? I have a feeling the male isn't going to last much longer..he's the smaller light orange one. My link

He isnt fighting with the female, I think he is trying to mate :/ although he does look like he has some sort of nervous system depletion in his tail along with a few kinks in his spine, I would take him out of the tank and put him in a recovery tank, feed him and give some live food. If he does not recover in a week he probably in a lot of pain and is at the verge of death. Sorry :(

Thank you! What kind of live food can I give him?

At first it did seem like attempts to still act normal aand mate. He does look sick. Tho i do not know what an old fish may look like if any different. but toward the end i saw what u were talking about about both of them using their tails on eachother at the same time. It is weird but it seems even the plump female may be sick as well noting the tight/closed fins. Unless she usually isnt like that, just in the video. Are all of the fish holind their fins to their bodies? Try to search common fresh water diseases and fungi and then try to keep an eye out for those symptoms so you can treat them. But i just think the female and other may not be feeling well either

He is trying to mate but he is too ill do do the job :-( I think he has internal parasites. Can you move him to a quarantine tank? Feed him cooked, de-shelled peas and get some medication for internal parasites
