Ive been on holiday for a little while, when I got home I found convict fry, tons of it!
And saw my oscar sucking them up, also my other 2 cons paired up but I had to give them away.
How long until the fry grow up?

Merry Christmas

Thanks

Have you removed them from that tank? They probably won't live long enough to grow up with the oscar.

They are still in the tank and the oscar leaves them alone now, the convicts have stepped up there game and have turned into serial killers.
The oscar is now in the 39 gallon with kribs. (yes I know this aint ideal but its my only choice)

because the cons are trying to tear him apart and he cant defend himself against 2 cons pouncing at him.
How long can I keep him in there for? It will only be until march and then he will move back, as the cons will go into 68 gallon tank.
Oh and is there a way to get convict fry to grow faster as there still as small as I first saw them, tiny little wriggling with big sun glasses.

If you do actually have a 200G tank, why have you got Convicts in there? Why not move them and their fry to the 39 and move the fish over from the 39 to the 200?

Problem solved...

Also... Alot of people (including me!) warned you that Convicts are evil fish when breeding, so in all fairness, you should have had something in place for this event when it happened.

The best way to increase growth rates would be to feed them with something like Prima 5-6 times a day and also daily water changes.

I know you warned me and as many aquarists I like to experiment for myself, I thought about moving the cons over but then I thought why disrupt there little pit with all those fry and risk the fry getting eaten.
I moved the other 2 cons out as those paired up, they went into a friends tank, the cons now hate eachother and they constantly fight, I do not want that to happen to me.
The oscar isnt in the 200 cos the cons go out of their way to the other side of the tank to chase him around, which I dont understand as theres plenty space in between them.

+1

I don't know many fish keepers who like to "experiment." Normally if someone has told me something bad could happen, I will generally tend to steer away from that direction.....sure, get a lion as a playmate for your housecat, they aren't always aggressive...

1 Common plec 10 inches, 1 Albino senegal bichir, the pair of cons, 1 gibbicep plec.

so you've got cons in the 39g and 200g? I'd move the oscar over to the cons in the 200g that aren't spawning.

I have no problem with experimenting, but with Convicts... Really? They have that name and reputation for a reason.

If you move the fry and parents to the 39G alone then they will basically be a production line. You will need a 4ft grow out tank for the fry and will probably end up becoming over run with them as they WILL breed every month. My HRP's did, and they're a slightly more desirable fish to keep and i still had trouble rehoming about a hundred of them for something like 75p each.

If the parents eat the eggs if you do move them then they will spawn again within a fortnight.

I don't really see any other option for you really. An Oscar can't stay in a 20, 39 or a 68 gallon tank, so unless you move the Cons you will have to rehome the Oscar.

Personally, i would rehome the Convicts or take them to your LFS and try and get a pair of Rainbow Cichlids. Just as willing to spawn, but they lack the all out KILL when protecting fry.
