just turned the tank lights on and wow i have never known a fish to greet you like that the pair of salvini's went mad with the female getting really excited to the point where the male told her off

you wouldnt believe the colour this morning

i thought a striped raphael was just another name for a humbug cat ? my mate has a couple, and whatever they are they are much more than 6 inches.

I can imagine they are like how the texas greet me at feeding time as they are with the way your tank is set up I dont think you would get too much aggression from them. You dont have many hiding spots/caves for the salvini to take over and guard. If I put a cave like set up in the texas tank there is a war over who is getting it, if they decide to spawn however it maybe a different matter. They do add that nice extra splash of colour.

I am massively keen on setting up a SA cichlid tank, but since I only have room for a 33g tank presently it's a no go.

Why am I telling you this I hear you cry? Because I want you to know that I'm very envious! Great looking fish.

you could still do it , just on a smaller scale with something like apistos . still got the cichlid personality but in a smaller package

well ahead of you.....have an angel, Bolivian ram and Dwarf Flag currently. Love the personalities of each and their interaction. Want to move to breeding one species, but need to thin our the 'community' fish in there first.

yeah i am fearing that and just as i was thinking about it the have started displaying to each other

If they are displaying they will most likely ignor all other fish, if they are anything like the pairs I have, its once the eggs are laid is when the problems start with them guarding the eggs. you have 2 options, a tank divider if you want to raise the fry, or remove the eggs, once the eggs are gone they should go back to their normal behaviour.

Wow those Salvini are beautiful but boy would I be worried if they decide to spawn, you might want to think about adding some tall bushy plants to break the tank up a bit, give them some areas to use and hiding places for the other fish

i have no plants only some horrible fake ones the real ones i had was stripped and destroyed by the other cichlids

that vid is only to show the colours not for a decent video ill do that when the tank is clean

Well you can clearly see how vivid the colouration is. Wow i want some (one day). They are magnificent. I love how the loach swim around amongst those big boy cichlids, kind of amusing.
