the tank will have low light, and slow growing root feeding plants and no co2.
Adding ferts to the water column will just cause algae as little of it will be taken up,
Water collumn ferts with no phosphate or nitrate like PlantaMin don't cause algae.
as a pose to what? ferts WITH nitrate and phosphate?

just to reiterate, nitrate and phosphate DO NOT cause algae
Just the fact that plantamin says on the back that it doesn't include those 2 things because they cause algae shows that there is proof that they do.
If they didn't and there was no evidence for it doing so then they would be forced to remove it by trading standards or some authority. Not to mention the probable millions they have invested in research on the subject.

that must be it then! the proof we have been looking for, i'm glad they spent millions spent on plant food research!!! :0/

dennerrle claim under gravel heaters are a must.
they also claim a lighting break helps fight algae as it cant adapt as quick as plants.
they also try and sell their over priced special plant tubes under the assumption it will reduce algae!
all of these "facts" are wrong.

i suppose i should believe what it says on the packet tho.
so i will lower the levels of nitrates and phosphate (probably around 40-50ppm and 5+ppm) in my 3+watts per gallon tank. in the hope it will stay algae free!!

what do you think i should lower it to that will still keep algae at bay?
or is it that my nitrate and phosphate levels are already considered low?

thats not proof at all, how come i can dose 20ppm of nitrate and 2 ppm pf PO4 without getting algae if it causes it, ammonia is the trigger for algae and others will back my statement up
Do the same in a tank with no plants and you will see huge algae growth if sufficient light is present.
It doesn't matter how many people back you up, well controlled and funded research shows otherwise.

I think you are getting confused. N&P feed algae, but the dont cause algae.

Algae are never nutrient limited. Even in those papers it shows that. NO3 at 0.259mg/l & PO4 0.0442mg/l and yet there was still algae growth.
Algae is always there, so of course raising the N&P levels are going to cause quicker growth!

the last link is on macro algae isnt it? but even still look at the levels. They are in micrograms so trying to limit N&P in our aquaria is pointless - you cant starve algae. simple.
Do the same in a tank with no plants and you will see huge algae growth if sufficient light is present.

ahh, but there you go, you have just mentioned light. One of the biggest, if not the biggest variable in algae growth, N&P is just something to pput the blame on. they dont think about light, they just test the water and because one nutrient is higher than normal then it must be tht nutrient that is casing algae.

Have a look here, there is some interesting links to algae discussions:

why would you buy and add plant ferts to a non planted tank?!?!?!?!
that hardly the point is it!
buy some fish and keep them in a dog basket see if they do well!

Oh my god!

This is what i Hate about this forum,
I simply asked for a good brand of fert pellets. And you guys start telling me i`m doing every thing wrong.....

The fact is the tank has been set up for a long time in its latest incarnation its been running for the last year with no algae issues. So why Are people telling me that doing water changes as i have for the last year and have done in various other tanks is going to cause Algae?

Its because of this that i want to alter the water chemistry of the tank as little as possible.

On the website is says that the casuels last for 6 months, does any one know if this is true?

I never said you were doing anything wrong, i was just passing on my advice. It is up to you whether you take it or leave it.

Thanks, Aaron

I use flourish root tabs in my sand for my low tech planted tank. My dwarf sag and Crypt retrospiralis are sending out runners I have 5 new baby plants and I planted this tank 2 month ago the plants are growing great. My water sprite is vowing like a weed to. I have almost 2wpg it's well stocked with fish I do weekly 50% water changes and add excel everyday iron every other week.

But the flourish tab I found worked great my old Val loved them.

If you are adding excel then it isnt classed as low tech though.

Thanks, Aaron
