Female Bettas With Beards..?

Huh, very interesting..

@Katty- Thankie! The last cory we had with a clown loach did the same thing with each other, the two were neigh separable when they did their 'dances'

@Keithp - Yeah I noticed that on Mavenna when she flared at the new girl a lot, who like to hang around Mavenna's quarantine container with her verticals showing. By the by Mavenna is healing up well, though she will have a notch in her belly fin from Kalli >:/ dratted testosterone-pumped female..

@lilfishie - Ahhh okie, and thanks! I might get a fourth later today, a little crowntail to help keep the balance in order so they don't nip each other up again when I release Mavenna back into the tank - she's the biggest girl of the lot.

@GuppyGoddes - That's where Mavenna's going too in her healing process with the long fins.. She likes flaring at my steel blue tiny girl, and the other is just sitting there displaying her vertical bars and swimming in a submissive pattern.. leading me to think I have a lesbian couple because I've sometimes caught Mavenna showing her verticals at the little girl. :/

It is very unusual for a female to show vertical breeding barring to another female are you sure you haven't got a male in the mix? I have seen the vids and all look female apart from the one in the breeding trap with the torn fins, if possible could we get a clear photo instead of a vid? it's always best to have larger groups of females to even out the aggression like 5 or 6 but there will always be an alpha and torn fins will probably still occur, I have lots of floating weed at the top of my girls sorority so they can swim into it if they feel the need to, this usually slows down the aggressor which then loses interest  I do hope you have more then one Khuli and Cory they are sociable fish and appreciate the company of their own kind :good:

i have had females in the past show vertical bars as a sign of dominance, and all 4 of them where 100% females

Interesting, I have only ever seen them bar up in readiness to breed but I guess they may do it as a sign of aggression too I haven't come across it but alot of my alpha girls have been pale rather than dark so that could explain it!

i thought the same when mine did it, have kept them for years and only had the 1 girl do it, but like you said most of my paler females tend to be alpha

I'm fairly sure Mavenna's a female I can see her egg spot clear as day, she's just BIG.

There are two Khulis in the tank, and I've seen decent results with having 1 cory in the tank, his swimming companion then was a clown loach. This one and white Alli have bonded together, they're always seen very close to each other and I'm not sure if I can stock two more fish with two ghost shrimp in the tank.. 4 is the number I'm hearing, but I've had three of them free-swimming before when Mavenna was isolated, and no aggression whatsoever since I took Kalli out. None of my girls have nicks.
