I've never done Infusoria before and I hope someone could help me out with it:

I put lettuce and corn husks in water and left it in sunlight for 4 days. It's now cloudy white. Did my infusoria turn out right, and if so do I feed it to my babies yet?

Also, when I try boiled egg yolk none of the fry go for it. How exactly do you feed it to them?

Thanks for any help at all!

im not sure about the infusoria but betta fry only eat things that move so egg yolk isnt a very good thing to use.Tough i have heard people use it with success.

Yeah, I live in seriously the middle of nowhere so I have extremely limited resources. I have half a vial of brine shrimp left, bought from a city several hours away, but other than that all I can do is make stuff at home, i.e. boiled egg yolk, infusoria, and mosquito larvae. I wish I wish I wish I wish I could get some microworms ><

Well you'd have to ship them buutt, it's probably too late now as betta fry need meatier food at one week old. How old are they? Can you set up a brine shrimp culture?

if you breed bettas you will have to travel miles to take them to a fish shop or to take them to get impported off.Why don't you get a microworm's culture delivered?

Because it would be more fun to deal with what I've got ^^ Anyhow I'm breeding them to keep, not to sell.
They're only 5 days old and besides I've never figured out how to hatch BS without an incubator. :p

Let's just assume I want an answer to the question I asked, shall we?

I dunno, I guess you could feed it to them or at least try. Have you looked up the articles on how to grow BBS? Sorry to hassle you, but if you possibly can you can save yourself a lot of hassle and just start feeding them that.

I would seroiusly suggest a microworm culture. Please don't say I'm not answering your question because I am. The infusoria will only work the first few days so you will need something high in protein and the microworms are not only high in protein but are also really easy to keep. I usually sell my culture for $5.00 but am currently over stocked so if you want I can send you one for free (and free shipping of course). They are SO easy. I keep mine in the back yard in a small tupperware container with a lid. They are too tiny to crawl out and you don't have to airate or anything like bbs. If you want some let me know and I will send you a couple TBS in a little baggy (will be several hundred worms). When you see them crawling on the side of the bag or tupperware you just take a toothpick and scoop a few up and swish the toothpick in the fry water. These have never failed for me and the fry love them. let me know

To get to your original question: I've used egg yolk on betta fry. You have to hard boil an egg, cool the yolk, and then take a VERY small amount on the tip of your finger. Then I usually add a tiny drop of water and rub my fingers together. You will feel the egg yolk break apart. Then just touch the surface of the water and you will see a million little floating egg bits, and if you look closely, you should see the little fry gobble it up.

As for your infusoria, if it's got a white cloud in it, it should be all set to give them. Again, if you look closely, you should see little white stringy things crawling around in the jar...and that would be your infusoria!

I've used both, so I hope this helps. The next time I spawn, however, I think I will invest in the microworm culture.

Good luck! :)

Um.........this thread is a year old!

If you spawned your betta you should have been prepared. By the way - Where did you spawn them? Hopefully not in your 10 gallon with the 19 other fish??

Agree totally with bronzecat on this, male bettas get very protective of their fry and eggs, and could kill off other fish if they are in the same tank and they consider them a threat!

also, its really not recommended to keep a male and female betta together (except very short term for breeding) although they can get along fine for ages, they can suddenly turn on each other, with no warning, and you come home to dead fish!

also a 7-8 gal tank is nowhere near big enough for 11 goldfish (even if 9 of them are babies) 30 gal is the recommended minimum for 1 adult goldfish (although this can depend somewhat on the species of goldfish) you really need to get a much bigger tank for those fish.

sorry to be so down on you, but these are things which really need addressing.

I have plenty of microworms. Just send me S & H costs of, let's say, $5 for the postage, package, and culture, and we'll be good to go. PM me if ya need some, though I agree with other posters that you really should be more prepared if you're going to spawn your fish.
