to whom it may concern:

I am new to battas and have several questions.

1. How long can a batta go without food without his health beeing adversely affected?
2. How long can they servive without food?
3. I leave the light above my bata's tank on until I go to bed at night, is this unhealhy for him? Should I turn it off during the day?

1. I'm not really sure how to awnser this one. :/
2. Very long, although you should feed them every day or every other day. I think someone here had a betta that didn't eat for a month? lisie maybe...
3. What size is your tank?

1. About four days without food, a betta will weaken.

2. Don't know... don't want to try to find out. :(

(It's not good to let your pet go without food if he doesn't need to, unless it is only one day a week to 'clean out the system'.)

3. Are you using the light to heat the tank? Need more info.

Thanks to all who responded. Here's some more info.

One of you asked how large my tank is. It's a one gallon tank.
In answer to your question about heating, we use the light both to heat and also to a lesser extent to be able to look at him and so he can see his surroundings. My question really was is having the light on itself (the physical illumination) a danger to him. Thanks for the tips on feeding!!

P.S. Sorry for my misspellings of betta.

You're welcome. :)

The actual light won't hurt him physically, but it may stop him getting natural rest if it is on late at night. Bettas need a dark time at night to rest from a hard day's... um... swimming. :p

(In a one gal, a 25w heater should do fine if you ever need one. No more than 25 though or it may get too warm.)
