:D cheers everyone

a lfs has some  yellow cutie "feeder barbs" who have a black spot in the middle.
I'm wondering what they are and if they would be OK as a group of them in a community tank, and if so how many is recommended to keep?
do they have any natural predators I should avoid in stocking a new tank?

Maybe they are gold barbs? They sound kind of similar to what you are talking about, but I am not exactly sure.

I have never really heard of "feeder barbs"

Find out what they are and buy them from some tank not labelled as "feeders". Any feeder fish are just going to be ones that are culled from a hatch and their fate is in the belly of a predator. Unless they're goldfish or guppies, the most common feeders, I would assume there is some reason they are being culled and made dinner, such as bad coloration or other genetic abnormalities due to inbreeding.... *shrug*

This looks like it might be what you're seeing.... pay attention to the note about females: http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Di...cfm?pCatId=1010

i have one that sounds just like that its orange and speckeled - i got told thats its a cherry barb but i only had one (got it with the fish tank lol  ) and went and bought another and it looks completly different - could just be that ones a babyish one and the other isnt if u need a photo or anything to help i should be able to help u out

hope that helps

Xanthianacids Hunkier  again

we checked out a few other fish shops today and I took particular note of the barbs and I think that they may be gold barbs. So stopped back in at the place selling them as feeder barbs gave them a good look over couldn't see any problems (all good colour, uniform markings, no deformities) but all of them are female I think as the only markings they have is one black dot (internet search says males have more black patterning) So we grabbed a dozen at 45Cents each. I asked why they were selling them as feeder barbs and they told me thats what they brought them as (local breeder trading for credit was my guess because of all one sex and small size)
