Feed Them Live Blood Worm

I fed my Betta, "Red", a little bit of dried blood worms & sadly he ended up dying 2 days later. It was heartbreaking. If I ever get another Betta, I'll be sure to stick with the flakes.

There is absolutely nothing wrong w/ feeding live bloodworms.
I feed mine frozen and they love it, but I'm sure they would love it more if the worms were still alive and wriggling around.

As for the worm popping out of the gills. That happens all the time to my fish, specially my cories.

The worm should work it's own way out. I also have this with my cories...one of the other cories swam up and sucked it out of the other's gill! Just feed your betta one bloodworm at a time.

Have you tried other live foods? Try some brineshrip or cultivate some young mosquito larvae ( leave a bucket of water standing in a sunny spot for a few weeks , you should get some ) . Live foods are great for all fish. They may be bred and domesticated but their instincts are still there. Promoting their natural behaviour is always good.

I tried that, my Betta (and other fish) went crazy for mossie larvae! And it's such an easy thing to do. The only problem is I haven't seen any larvae in there for weeks
