LFS only has eupterus, I was hoping to get a group of Multi's to go in with my cichlids in my 260l when it's cycled.

How different are the two, should I continue to look for multi?

His Eupterus are £4 each and already about 1.5/2" long.

Cheers

Vicki

There is a big difference is socialability for a start, S. multipunctata do well is groups but S. euptera is quite aggressive to any other synos and even other tankmates, depending upon what they are.

Are you planning a Rift Valley cichlid tank?

Hoping to keep Malawi's looks like I'm definately going for yellow labs, as I know I can get them locally but having trouble at successful window shopping at the moment :(

Will keep looking for multi's :)

Have you started a Malawi thread in the Old World Cichlid section yet? I think www.riftvalleycichlids.com might have been used by a few members including elisew to stock tanks (do check with section members, memory might be failing me), including the purchase of catfish from the same store.

But in terms of seeing fish in the flesh locally, it would definitely be worth calling Aquajardin and even Romsey World Of Water to see if they have any Malawi catfish and then plan a trip up from Bournemouth.

Another source I've just quickly looked up is "Tropical Fish 2 Your Door" (part of of the www.tropicalfishfinder.co.uk associated stores), where Wildwoods claim to have four Multis in stock... http://www.tropicalfishfinder.co.uk/stores_productsinfo.asp?store=54&prod=1831

Yes I did start a thread but think I waffle on too much and scare people off, lol. I've been getting great stocking advice from some members, but it's just finding the fish, so I will definately give those two places a call, as I would prefer to buy in person than order online. I think the problem comes from there being so many names, obviously when I had the community tank we just said neons/angels/dwarf gourami - It all seemed very black and white, now I'm going more specialist, it seems harder to get the stocking together :(

Will have a look at that website too though.

Cheers

Synodontis petricola or lucipinnis are usually less expensive than multi's, at least on this side of the pond, and don't grow quite as large. You may be better off ordering online if your local shops don't have what you want. Most of the fish I have now came through the mail, the local shop seldom has anything that interests me.
The yellow Lab's are one of the milder disposition Malawi cichlids, mix well with a wide variety of other species.

Hi Vicki,

I have two Eupterus that were part of my 4ft Malawi set-up, after keeping the Malawi's for a while I changed back to a planted set-up... Still have the two Eupterus living happily in the planted set-up, but they don't really fit in with my plans to heavily plant the aquarium.

If you ever come Heathrow Airport way and can collect your more than welcome to my two.. Just a thought :good:
