I prefer gravel because i have not used sand in my tanks yet so i can't say if better than gravel.

Not if you do it properly and/or have a heavy grain. Siphoning sand you just hold the tube about a quarter to half an inch above the sand and it gets all the detritus. It doesn't get buried in like gravel does because sand "pushes" all the larger and heavier stuff to the top of it making it easy to see and remove.
