You guys have been helping me slowly work towards buying fish, thank you!
Now I have another question- what sorts of plants do you suggest, along with substrate and general decor?

what fish are you going to get?

Suggestions were
18 marbled hatchets
40 neon tetras
12-13 kuhli loaches
for a 55 gallon, maybe some other fish of my choice...

I would always recommend sand, its simply more natuarl looking, easier to clean, and good for plants and bottom feeders. Depends on what theme you want, if you're going asian you could do a zen garden type thingy with bushy plants, grass, mosses, and a little buddha statue or a dragon. Its all up to personal preference really ^_^

If you have at least T8 lighting, get amazon swords. My kuhli loaches loooooooooove to weave in and out of it. :hyper:

Good plants are anubias, any kind of moss, java fern, water wisteria, and tiger lotus :good:

my favorite plants are riccia, java moss, water wisteria, moneywort, cardamine lyrata, argentine swords, hornwort, tiger lotus, anubias, water poppy, and parrot's feather. i would recommend a set up that is heavily planted, has a dark substrate, river rocks, multiple pieces of driftwood, and multiple caves

Oh, and if you want your kuhlis to be active and out and about like mine, give them hundreds of hidey holes and nooks and crannies to hide in ^_^ the more hiding places they have, the more they are out :good:
