Well everyone here probably has a few authors they particularly like, so I figured that having everyone post their favorite author and the genre, and possibly a notable book, would be a great way for people to find new books that they would like.

I'll start this off with a few:

Stephen King: Horror/Suspense. I would highly recommend the Roland The Gunslinger saga. It's a 7 book story, that covers everything you could possibly imagine and more.

Clive Cussler: Adventure/Mystery. My personal favorite is Lost City, which was amazing. I would recommend any of his books. Most of them the central character is one person (Dirk Pitt) but there are a few other main characters in other books.

Brian Jacques: Fantasy/ Adventure. His Redwall series is the most notable. It's set in a world where animals act like people and walk and talk. It's not nearly as lame as it sounds, and the storyline through all the books is very very good.

great topic!

I agree with both of you stephen king is great and the gunslinger is a brilliant piece of work

i also love dean r koontz, j r r tolkein, james herbert, the list could go on

I'll have to go for my top 5, depends what mood i'm in;

Haruki Murakami; Japanese author who writes surreal comical fantasy novels with deeply emotional (depending on how you read it) overtones. Excellent stories with beautiful prose that verges on the poetic.
Favourite of his books; Kafka on the Shore.

Friedrich Nietzsche; Truly original thinker IMHO who obviously put every effort into his thoughts. All of his books are brilliant, even if you have no interest in philosophy; just to follow the thought processes involved in his work makes for excellent reading.
Favourite of his books ; Thus Spake Zarathrusta (philisophical novel)

Albert Camus; An excellent author, again involved with philosophy, but as a writer could turn his hand to different styles. Allusive but unpretencious.
Favourite of his books; The Plague.

Chuck Palahniuk; The author of Fight Club, must say that many of his books follow similar templates and after a while can become boring. But when he writes well and with an original idea he is brilliant. Subversive, darkly comic storytelling with totally out there, yet meaningful plots and ever interesting characters.
Favourite of his books; Haunted

Derek Raymond; Nobody can touch him IMHO for noir, crime fiction. Breaks the typical mold by managing to bring an element of reality and depth to his novels that i rarely feel elsewhere.
Favourite of his books; A state of Denmark this is one of his books that isn't a crime novel (in the stereotypical sense) and while all his crime novels are excellent this particular book struck a chord with me.

Oh for Sci-Fi try Philip.K.Dick his mental state (often cited as being schitzophrenic through to depressed through to too sane for his own good) is palpable in his writing and the deep thinking that seems to be drawn into his novels makes his writing IMO a step above the other Sci-Fi novelists whos work i have read.
Favourite read; The Man in the High Castle

Dean Koontz - obviously, no need to explain who the man is....

John Saul - very close to Dean Koontz

Daniel Quinn - if you never read another book, you must read Ishmael

Mr. Quinn is best known as the author of Ishmael, the novel that in 1991 won the Turner Tomorrow Fellowship, established to encourage authors to seek "creative and positive solutions to global problems." Ishmael has been in print continuously since its publication in 1992 and is currently available in twenty languages. Thoroughout the U.S. and Canada and in other countries as well, Ishmael is used as a text in a broad range of classes that include anthropology, ecology, history, literature, philosophy, ethics, biology, and psychology, at age levels from middle school through graduate level. http://www.ishmael.com/origins/DQ/
