Faulty?

I was given a 300w heater with my tank. Having set it yesterday first at 77F and then 74F a little worried the tank was reading 80F last night and this morning and upon coming home 82.5F.. Is it a faulty heater?

I have unplugged the heater for now and will let the tank cool down some and also to test to see if it is the heater (though dont see what else it could be) what do you guys think?

Well... it could be the thermometer also... What size is your tank... A 300w can be used in a very large tank... Maybe overrated for your specific tank??... If your thermometer is one of these "paste on" jobs... they are not very accurate.... Does the water feel particularly warm to the touch?? (also... what are your ambient (room) temperatures.

The tank is a 354 litre and it is a digital thermometer. I will try our second thermometer and see if it is consistent. Our room temps are normal, no need for heating occasionally need to open windows..

The water felt very warm this morning but then when I came home not that warm (but then I have bad circulation).

My heaters are usually set a bit lower than the desired temp due to tank size and ambient temps. If it was faulty i would of thought it would just boil the water or wudnt work at all

I always use 2 heaters individually insufficient to reach 30 degrees C but together they can. I run my Tank at 26 average I just prefer this set up so that if one goes closed circuit it wont fry my fish well that's the theory anyway .

Yep as Ludwig said it could be the themometer I run an analogue and a digital in my tank.

Well after checking various thermometers, decided to replace the heater and touchwood so far seems to be running alot more smoothly without cook mode. Thanks for all the help guys
