Hopefully fatheadminnow sees this at some point cuz he's the one I know for sure can answer...but does anyone else know if the aquaclear 70 filter is noisy? TY

I really liked your filter set up in your filter cleaning video and I had a few questions since Im thinking about buying it.

I heard you say its an aquaclear 70. How much of the media that you have in yours came with it? I liked the big fat sponge and the ceramics specifically so Im curious if those were included or bought extra.
MOST IMPORTANTLY: Could you do me a favor and really listen hard to see if you can hear ANY mechanical noise from it? I know it makes a waterfall sound, mine filter does too and that is okay. I have a child that cannot tolerate mechical type sounds that the rest of the us can just ignore...think buzzing from fluorscent lights....those drive him bonkers. Would be superb if I knew ahead of time if it makes noise that way before I spend the money.

The price Im finding on the aquaclear is MUCH better than anything else so Im really curious as far as what you can tell me. My pengion mini biowheel is irking me...I dont like the hardplastic with fabric stretched over it, type cartridge it has. Plus is that hubby gave me permission to buy a filter now that will work with a bigger tank because I AM getting a bigger tank..hopefully next year.

I've got a pair of them running on my 72 gallon oscar tank. Let me unplug one, and add an inch of water. The biggest mechanical noise, if you can call it that, would be the cover rattling or buzzing a bit. A piece of slate solves this.

Mine are pounded half to death, I show equipment no mercy, so if it's going to make a noise I'll get it to that point.

Thank you...I REALLY appreciate that kind of investigative committment. My son totally appreciates it too believe me. It saves him the pain AND the consequences for his actions when he freaks out

One has a little impeller buzz going the other doesn't; imminent part replacement. A new one won't do that, I used to run nearly all AC's before switching the fishroom over to an air driven centralized system.

The sound of water running in the fishroom, the faucet noise itself is louder than the one with the impeller buzz. This would be comparable to a kitchen faucet. The one with the good impeller is quieter. I have a 70cfm bath fan that vents humidity out of the fishroom, this is a small bathroom fan. It's louder than either filter. I have a small turbo fan in the window opposite the fishroom; http://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-HT800-Supe...e/dp/B0000BYDUC It's louder by far than either filter.

24 feet away, by the computer, I can hear the computer over the noisy filter, and the 65 gallon tank that's a dozen feet past that over the AC. 65 is running a sponge & box filter with a lot of air, the bubbling water & excess air bleeding off is about equal to the computer.

HTH, every one I've ever ran that buzzed was either the cover needing a rock, or an impeller replacement.

I have been busy studying for finals, so I have not been monitoring the boards lately like I usually do.

It already seems that Tolak has answered the question...lol...but I thought I would also answer.

The filter for its size is surprisingly quiet.

However, if you have sand as a substrate, it seems to get some sand sometimes stuck in the impeller compartment, and this sometimes makes a rattling sound.

If you do not have sand, then this is not a problem.

Also, with the cover on, like Tolak said, there seems to be an "echoing" sound, but if you remove the cover, or put something heavy on top, this solves the problem.

Other than that, you really can't tell if the filer is running or not unless you listen really well, or are standing right next to it...lol.

For the media, it came with that huge sponge you saw in the video, the big bag of "ceramics" (Bio-mass) you also saw in the video, and then a big bag of carbon which I have taken out. The other stuff in the filter are random sponges and what not, and then the filter floss as well has to be bought separate.

Other than that, I would HIGHLY recommend buying any size Aquaclear filter, as they are REALLY good, especially for easily customizing/changing up the filter media. You are not stuck with "fixed-sized" filter cartridges like on other HOB filters.

Hope this help!

Yes, I can "second" both reports above. I've run a number of aquaclear models and they've always been quiet, reliable and flexible. The little lids on mine have buzzed, just like Tolak describes. I sometimes weighted them, sometimes just left them off.

awesome..thank you all SO much. Guess I can go shopping for a new aquaclear filter ..yay!

Now this just begs the question..even tho Im pretty sure its fine...

The filter I have now is finally starting to drop ammonia..Im down to .50 today. Should I wait until this cycle is done so that I can add the aquaclear and run them in tandem to cycle the new one? Or should I get it now and run them both and let them cycle together?

Also, when I was searching for this filter, I saw powerheads for it as well...sold seperately. If I buy this filter is there anything I HAVE to buy to make it work, or is it gonna be plug and play ready to go?

The filter is a stand alone unit, and does not need the aid of anything else to properly run.

Get the filter now and run then both in your current cycling tank.

NOTE: When you go an remove one of the filters and put it on a new tank, you might have a slight Ammonia/Nitrite spike in the tank that you removed the filter from.

Because when your removed the filter, you are also removing some of the beneficial bacteria.

But it is perfectly fine to do so! :good:

well....superpetz here has one for 53.99. Found them for like 35.99 online but 10 shipping makes it not worth saving 10 bucks and waiting for over a week to me.

Just to clarify again...the 70 model would would for a 65 gallon tank right? and even I wanted to get a bigger tank than that, I could run my penguin and the aquaclear in tandem and be fine right?

You want around 5x turnover rate per hour on your tanks.

So, the AC 70 pushes out 300 gallons of water per hour.

So take 300/65 = 4.6

So, I would say it would be okay, but it also depends on what type of fish you are planning to get, and if you are going to have live plants or not.

If you get Cichlids, you want at least 7x turn over.

If you get plants, it is really nice to get up near 10x turn over.

Personally, in your case I would go with the Aquaclear 110 power filter.

The biggest tank I would personally put a 70 on is a 55 gallon.

But you should be okay over all.

Also remember, that the 300 gallons per hour was most likely tested without filter media in the filter, but with filter media in the filter you are probably looking at a lower GPH than 300.

well I went, I bought, I set it up, and now I think I must return.

The 70 is just too much for my sad little 10 gallon tank I think.

The water flow even on lowest setting is causing a major current in the tank...plants on both ends are waving in the "breeze". Not like they're waving MADLY...but definately moving a bit. I doubt that many of the fish I COULD keep in a 10 gallon are going to like that..most are pretty smallish. Please correct me if I am wrong tho before I return this tomorrow. Im going to leave it run tonight tho since I already have it set up.

Also...unless I shave the back completely off my hood, it doesnt fit with that filter. The hood had a place to notch out to accomodate a filter but even that isn't big enough. Trust me if I ask hubby if I can go buy one of those "half" hoods...I think he'll blow a gasket LOL

:::walking away dejectedly, sad about my pathetic setup:::::

Woah, on a 10 gallon you could do a full load of laundry in the tank with an AC70! That's a washing machine!

An AC20 or AC30 should be plenty for a 10, I used to run the 20's on 10 gallon tanks, the 50's on 29 gallon tanks.

If you are trying to cycle it on a 10 gallon, try tying a small piece of driftwood across the water flow to break it up a little. There was a topic quite some time ago in the betta section on how to use a piece of empty plastic pop bottle to lessen the current, be darned if I can find it though.

hahahaha a whole load of laundry..prolly so!

I just wanted a better filter than the penguin 150 I've been running because I hate the media for it..it sucks that way. I wanted the 70 because I WILL be getting a bigger tank..just not until next february..thought I'd save myself from buying a good filter now..and then buying a bigger one for the bigger tank yanno? I shoulda realized what would happen but I didnt think about the current from teh output....so sad dangit.

I thought you said you have a 65 gallon tank?

Not a 10 gallon?
