i am soon to get a 250 litre tank and was wondering what would be the best external filter to get?

it depends on what is available to you. Fluval and Eheim are usually pretty good. Get as big a filter as you can afford so if you ever upgrade the tank the filter can go straight onto it and you won't have to buy another one.

I've got an Eheim 2215 and it's an excellent filter. Very quiet and easy. I've never had a Fluval External though so I can't comment there.
