When a measurement is given for the fully grown size of a fish :fish: , is it giving the length from the head to the base of the tail or the head to the end of the tail? I don't know how clear that sounds, but hopefully someone will understand what I mean.

Tbh i dont realy get you but, if i'm guessing right then i'd say they would measure the whole overall length of the fish

Tip of snout to the end of body= Standard length. Tip of snout to the end of tail= Total length.

The tails of fish are obviously very variable in size, so SL is a better measure of the fishes real size/bulk.

lol that makes sense, but why? who is interested in how long your fish is, if it lost its tail? :hyper:

So do books and websites give the standard length of a fish or the total length of a fish then?

Generally books will give a fish's standard length, tip of snout to end of body (before the tail). The part where the tail joins the body and is measured from is called the caudal peduncle.
Fish are measured between these points just in case the tail has been damaged and is not complete. Also some male fishes have longer tails than their female counterparts. And how would you be trying to measure a male siamese fighting fish, they have huge tails unless they have been fighting :)

Where have I seen your avatar Larissa?

UltimateReef or Practical fishkeeping forums perhaps.

Oops, I just got your question - from the Disney movie Pinocchio. It's the fish, Cleo.

Ah that's where I've seen you. Pinocchio. That was a long time ago, you haven't changed a bit, still stunning as ever :)
We would have to measure you in fishy standard length, don't want to crease up that lovely tail of yours

It does not include the tail, only the body.

Hm? I thought it was otherwise....Why would someone not want to include a fishes tail??

Well, I suppose it's hardly a 'bulky' part of a fish, like the body contains organs e.t.c. but the tail is more 'thin' if you get my meaning.
