Euthanasia/ridding Of The Dead

maybe I should clarify what I consider small. I personally would only feel comfortable immersing something the size of a zebra danio...maybe up to a slim bodied fish like a khuli loach... anything betta sized or larger I wouldn't feel comfortable immersing.
I used to just put them in a bag and stick them in the freezer...I don't feel bad about it because I knew no better but I'm sure it was a terrible death.

This topic is so hard to get people to agree on. The only thing that I think everyone agrees on is blunt trauma/decapitation but the ick factor of that makes it unnacceptable to many.

other options that are generally accepted by one group or another (not by me btw) include immersion in vodka, clove oil, yucca "tea", suffocation by removal from water, subjection to ice, I can't think of anymore at the moment. The clove oil, yucca, and ice cold water immersion seem to be the most popular. I don't think that any of the others I listed are accepted by many people at all.

Ok from what I know you are supposed to use sodium carbonate to raise the Ph. Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, which I think the 2 are 2 different things. The baking soda raises the carbon dioxide levels in the water making the fish go unconcious thus then preventing them from waking up. Making sure that you use enough baking soda to actually kill the fish instead of just suffocating them is very important. Its like 1/4 cup baking soda to 1 cup water. It is a very quick death and in most cases is better that suffering form what ails it.
