I was going to post a thread about this other day but I thought maybe this was posted at one time or another.

I have 3 WalMarts within 15 minutes of me. One of them just sells fish equipment and other 2 sell fish. One of them is very well maintained and no over crowding just a pleasure to look at! The other one was just pure disgust! Algae build up every where I looked!

I am sure if I stuck my head near the tank it would of reaked of some ungodly smells!

I am sure its not Wal Mart as a whole that is doing this but I am sure a high majority of these store have unsanitary conditions for fish.

However, I would never ever buy a fish never buy a fish from ANY Wal Mart no manner how clean their tanks are or how healthy the fish look. They employees there, I am quite sure, don't have the proper training or the knowledge to take care of fish!

Actually, it is Walmart and you hit the nail on the head about training. On top of that, they don't have enough time to work on the tanks. When I talked to the pet dept. manager (if that's what you wanted to call him) in one of the stores near me, he said that he was the only one that worked on the tanks and in his 40 hour week, he had to stock the entire pet department, place the orders and split time in another department. He said he maybe got to spend 5 or 6 hours a week on the fish which isn't anywhere near enough time to keep the tanks clean, change the betta water (some cups in that store had less than an inch of water in the cup and that included the waste from where they hadn't been changed in weeks) and get all the dead fish out and there were plenty of them plus lots of bones on the tank bottoms (no gravel) where other fish had eaten the dead ones.

Plain and simple, Walmart doesn't care at all about the care of the fish, only making money. Some of their employees go out of their way and work off the clock to keep the tanks clean in the stores that do look good because they certainly don't have time to do it during their normal 40 hours. I'll get off my soap box now. I just get mad when I think about that place.

I've reported a LFS to animal protection and control, and they were happy to send someone down there to examine the (horrid) conditions I found the fish in. You can probably find your local AP&C number by calling your local humane society. Of course, talking to management should be the first step.
If all else fails, post the addy for their headquarters and we can all write them a letter of complaint about this situation. Ten or twenty letters is better than one, IMHO. If the fish keeping community banded together on things like this, I'm sure we could make ourselves heard. Sending a picture along with the complaint would probably help too.

Perhaps you could also contact an animal welfare group to get on to it.
I searched on Google to see if there was a group in the US particularly interested in tish and came across www.helpinganimals.com and read the fact sheet on tropical fish. However, I wished I hadn't read it as it made me feel guilty for keeping fish!
