Hiya,

I got some new fish yesterday:

3 Clown Loaches
3 Guppies
6 Neon Tetras

Ive noticed on the 3 clown loaches there are white spots all over their body and they are scratching on the rocks which indicates a parasite infection doesnt it?

I also woke this morning to find a dead guppy and a missing tetra (could have been eaten by bigger fish) and wondered why this could be, maybe stress?

Im not sure how to treat the tank/fish, any help appreciated!

Need to get treating for whitespot, read instructions carefully as with clowns sometimes you have to half dose the meds.
Turn temp up to 30 and increase aeration as the med and high temp will reduce 02 in the water.
How many gallons or litres it the tank.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

I dont actually have the stuff to test the water I didnt know what to get! .... please dont shout!! lol Its approx 20 gallon tank.

Do I need to do a 50% water change & "hoover" the gravel, i have read that somewhere? Have just turned temp up to 30 :good:

I already have some protozin, will read instuctions on that and see what i need to do there.

Once the whitespot clears up I would rehome the clown loaches the tank way to small for them.
Don't do a 50% water change clown loaches are very funny with large changes of water.
Get a liquid test kit always best to own your own.
For now take a sample of your tank water to the lfs and tell them to write the readings down for you.
Get a whitespot med fast as whitespot can soon kill a fish.
I won't shout at you don't shout at anyone lol.

Yes im aware i will need to rehome them soon, they are babies at moment so will be fine for the short term but im looking into getting a larger tank sorted for them.

How much do the kits cost? I will buy one if not too expensive.

This is the cheapest one but they say the nitrate test kit not that accurate.

OK thanks for that will defo invest in one of those i think.

Temp now turned up, treatment in progress & test on way. Now just gotta cross my fingers :)

What size would you say is a good size for an inccubation/hospital tank? Do you leave this running with no fish in just incase needed?

Hospital tanks usually depend on what fish you keep.
If there no desease in the main tank run the hospital filter in the main tank, then just set the hospital tank up when needed.

I've been having no problems with the API nitrate kit since getting better directions from API. Results are repeatable, and in a tank I have cycling it is showing the expected increase in nitrates. Here's the link to the API information:

I have increased the temp to 30 and also began treating with protozin but fish are stil deteriating.

The 3 clown loaches have pink at the bases of their side fins & dont seem to be very active.

Worried.... what should i do?

theres not much you can do. whitespot has to be treated asap.
just keep treating.
doing a gravel clean helps reduce the number of whitespot in the tank.
sometimes with whitespot they seem to get worse before they get better.

They seem to not be able to swim properly.

Think ill do a gravel clean now but wasnt sure whether it would make fish worse or not?

how long have you treated for so far?
did you add extra air?

you dont need to change 50% of the water tho.

Not sure what you mean by extra air?
To be honest i think its too late as they dont look well at all.

Im on day 2 of treatment.

Red at the base fins is septicemia.
You must increase aeration in the tank as the med and high temp reduce 02 in the water.
Don't sound good to me either to be honest.
