I've started to see longfins and albinos a lot more in shops recently. Mainly rasbora, barbs, danio species, along with plecos.

Long fin anything doesn't do much for me. I do like the sailfin platties (or Mollies? I can't remember), but not really a fan otherwise. Having said that I do have a dang betta...still not sure why I bought it, but it hangs around sitting on plants LOL.

It's the modern addiction to novelty. It isn't just fish keeping. A company makes a running shoe or hiking boot that is absolutely perfect, then discontinue it, or worse, change it, to make room for the new year's model. (That one is a particular pet peeve of mine)

Gotta keep selling fish, and that means coming up with the new, improved version. 'Tis the world in which we live, I'm afraid. Those of us who know better can continue to vote with our money, but it ain't gonna change a thing.

My local fish store with 700 plus tanks offers common and unique selection of fish, both tank raised and wild caught. The manager sadly admitted to me that they make their profit selling the glo fish and other novelty fish. He said, “that’s what the people want“.

Yes, more and more modified fish will show up the market. Unfortunately, we can not stop this trend. Especially, not in Asia where they love those modified fish. The weirder, the better...
And as long as there's a demand for new ornamental fish, these weird breeds will dominate the market. I'm not a fan of these modified breeds either. This past year I saw the albino cherry barbs for the first time. A friend who owns a fish store ordered them. But it took him very long before all of these fish were sold. After that he never ordered them again. They came from a German private breeder.

That's interesting. The photo I posted was from Glaser. I bet it's the same German source.

I will admit that I have 4 neon green pristella tetras. Caught my eye and I couldn't help it. When people see that tank, those are the ones they ask about. I've got a ton of other species in there with them, but they do stand out.

I once sailed on a sail boat with a long fin; definitely helped with the balance of the boat but it made dragging it out of the water more difficult.
