Encouraging Cherries To Breed

I've had 3 cherry shrimp for over three months now and have yet to have any offspring despite reading that they breed prolificly. I have two much larger, brighter ones i assume to be females and a much smaller, paler, more translucent male i guess. water parameters are all in check and they're fed with algae pellets and wafers every now and then to supplement their diet. Am i missing anything?

Add more shrimp, you may have one male, but he could be infertile, no one knows, Cherry shrimp are pretty cheap so add another 10 and you should see babies soon.

I doubt it's the parameters, unless the temperature is below 16oC

How big is their tank? Are there predators around to eat the babies?

I have 10 cherry shrimp and I've had no babies either I have one male.

I've just posed a question about this in the intertebre section. I was suggested that the temperature was too cold for them.

Not wanting to brag or tempt fate but my cherries are now breeding. I had 3 and nothing for months. I bought another 3 and now babies! Temperature is set at 26[sup]o[/sup]C / 79[sup]o[/sup]F

Interesting. Temp is 24 C, they're just kept with a few danios and 2 amano shrimp. Heavily planted 28L tank plenty of places to hide. I'll consider shaking up the gene pool then!

I brought loads a couple of months back, nearly all were juveniles though. Ive not seen any babies since having them but now i have quite a few females ready to burst with eggs so hopefully in the next couple of weeks i will be teeming with babies.

They do like to have a really comfy environment. Plenty of hiding places, plants and dark substrate usually helps. Also - dont remove the cast-off shells as shrimp can eat these to get some extra calcium back in their diets.

Flix - Its worth bearing in mind that danios may see baby shrimplets as a tasty snack!

Took my trio of cherries about 1 and a half months to settle in and start breeding in my 8 litre tank at work. They were tiny though when I got them, so they probably were just not mature enough

Both my females are carrying around and fanning big batch of eggs at the moment.

My understanding and experience of cherries is that they breed pretty much anywhere when the water is suitable. So, if not, check your parameters perhaps?

Flix - Its worth bearing in mind that danios may see baby shrimplets as a tasty snack!

I was thinking that, since they eat their own fry, which is why i now have a fry tank. Would shrimplets be ok in with my danio fry if i worked out how to fish them out?
