My bettas are finally spawning.

But there's a problem...

The male won't go down to pick up the eggs.

WHAT DO I DO! :no:

Sure iv read on the internet that they do it after they finish wrapping????

im far from being an exspert lol, sure iv read somthing like that somwhere though.

Wow everyone seems to have this problem! watching him and the girly until the end of the spawn, if no one is eating the eggs keep watching he may pick them up at the end of the spawn, if not OR if the couple start munching syphon the eggs into a very clean tub with an inch of warm (normal heat) water in, careful of condensation or they will go yellow and be no good. Some should hatch :good:

thank you so much!

First of, Congratulations :good:

Give him some time, If he's first time dad nature may have not been so generous when it comes to the instincts part. I'd only start to panic if he ignores them totally or eats them all. Don't worry, there are methods where you can raise fry without the male betta. I can't actually find this really good article I read, but I'm sure someone could give you advice on raising fry without a father, It can be done! XD

Some breeders say that some Males just aren't meant to breed because they've had continual difficulty with a particular male.

Good luck and keep us all informed [Sorry I couldnt be of much help]!

I was able to siphon up 8 eggs.

8. Lol.
Well, hopefully they hatch- : [
If not I'll try a different pair..

Well dont lose heart on the pair you like, I tried 3 times with the same pair before I had a successful spawn, Sometimes Betta dads improve after a go or two!

Keep us informed.

Can i ask about your set up too. Iv got a male a female betta coming to me next week, and would love to try my hand at breeding them.

All i have at the moment is a tank for the three betta's i have, divided. It will have a heater and filter in there by the time they come.

I know i need anouther tank for them to breed in. And i take it i would need to heat that? what about filter's and extra tanks or w,e? Food?

Thanks, Craig

I have a ten gallon aquarium filled halfway.
no gravel. a few live plants- anachris.
a clay pot, a fake plant, and some nooks and crannys the female can hide in.
I have an aquarium light over the top so the water doesnt evaporate, and a heater to keep at it around 76-78 F

When I was conditioning them I fed them every other day with.
Peas, brine shrimp, betta pellet food, or blood worms.

&& I will keep you guys updated!!!!!

I removed the male and female after they spawned.. they ate all of the eggs; minus the ones that I siphoned out.

And I just cleaned the tank out so I can set it up for another pair.
Which should I go with?
A red crown tail w/ female round tail.
purple veil tail w/ purple veiltail
OR
blue delta tail with purple roundtail?

I'll try and post some pics :D

10 gallon, what dimentions does that have? i have no idea how big 10 gallon is lol

Here you go Craig

Equipment Needed

* At least a 10 gallon spawning tank and as big a grow out tank as possible.
* Plants
* Indian Almond Leaf
* Heater
* Thermometer
* Sponge Filter
* Pump
* Airline
* Airline clamps to adjust the flow
* Small square piece of polystyrene, half a polystyrene cup or bubblewrap or floating plant for you male to build his nest under.
* Chimney to put the female in. We use a 2 litre coke bottle with the top and bottom cut off.
* Live food cultures for your fry

Spawning Tank Setup

Wherever you choose to set your spawning tank up, bear in mind that after spawning a light needs to be left on at night to assist the male in looking after the fry. The tank should be filled with no more than six inches of water, heated to 28-30c. The sponge filter, powered by an air pump, needs to be running and regulated by an air line clamp to reduce the movement on the surface of the water. Silk plants and/or live plants can be used. Silk plants give the female an area of retreat for resting. Live plants, such as floating frogbit, are good for the male to build his bubblenest under as well as providing the fry with a secure surface to hang on to. Indian Almond Leaf can be used as another bubblenest area, whilst adding a tonic to the water. There are no hard and fast rules regarding where a male will make his nest. Some will happily use a piece of polystyrene, some bubblewrap and some prefer plants. We normally start off with polystyrene and see how it goes.

Conditioning

Firstly you will need to condition your male and female separately for at least 2 weeks. The male can be conditioned in the spawning tank so he can establish his territory before the female is added. The temperature should be between 28-30c. You can feed Betta Pro, frozen or live bloodworm, glassworm or tubifex. These will need to be fed 3 times a day as much as they will eat.

It's very important that both male and female are in the best condition possible before breeding them.

And in case you missed this in the other thread.....this is part of our set up for breeding.

Can you exsplain to me the differance between the breeding tank, and the grow out tank, i mean i take it the grow out tank is for, well them growing.... But im not planning on breeeding more than once. So why couldnt they breed, remove the fish back to their homes, well once they hatch. And let the babies grow in thier? then seprate when the time comes. If it was a 10 G tank, then i could just divide that up.

Your checklist:

i need to get the tanks. Plants, or could i use plastic plants, for her to hide in?

Need an extra heater.

And am i right in saying heygetright doesnt have a filter in his breeding tank?

the rest i think isnt much of a prob to get hold of cheaply.

Hoping to pik up a tank cheap on ebay with a heater and filter etc already in...

Is this 10G or not?

That tank is 15 gal.

The thing is....if you end up with 100 fry they are not all going to be able to grow in a small tank and there's no way you can divide up a tank to house that many babies. Betta fry give off a hormone which stunts the growth of the other fry around it which means you need a bigger growout tank so that this hormone is more diluted.

The babies then need to be separated at about 8 weeks old which means being able to heat all the containers and do daily water changes.
