Emergency!

I know it seems abit mean, but i was woundering if breeders ever get rid of the baby fry. say as soon as they hatched, take 5 or so, and let the others die off?

Like i said it seems mean, but i dont want lots of fish, i wouldnt be able to care for them all.

Then don't breed!!!

I don't see the point of going to the trouble to breed and to put your fish through that stress if you're going to cull most of the fry.

And whose to say that the 5 you decide will live are going to a) survive or b) not have any kind of deformity.

no one, whos to say that if i let them all grow, thy will all be healthy or survive.

Im learning, i can see your an exsperianced breeder and take it all very serious. For me im just learning and find it intresting. Sorry if im up setting you as your last reply seemed a little off, i think its better that im asking all the questons before i actually do anything lol.

Thanks for all your help, it is apreciated =]

Didn't mean to sound offish......it's just that culling potentially healthy fry goes against everything we try to do.

It's good that you're asking questions but if you really want to do it then research and get everything set up that you need, so that you are in a position to allow all the fry a chance to live .

I think the issue is Craig that we get a lot of betta keepers on here who havent had their betta as a pet for long before they try their hand at breeding, and rightfully Netty was trying to show you what a major operation breeding is, having said that you could not care for that many fry it is logical to suggest you dont breed your fish. I currently have a load of fry and as a first time betta breeder i can tell you even after a year of reading and masses of support I am still sometimes overwhelmed by how much work goes into the little guys!

Netty and other experienced betta breeders on here are happy to help once you have really done thorough research and looked into expenses and where your fry would go at the end.

Perhaps you should start a new thread for your questions

Well i joined this fourm when i got my betta. About 7 mounts ago, and since then iv read up on breeding them a fair bit. I think i have the basics down. From what iv read, this is what i understans happen. ill keep it simple and short:

You condtion the fish for 2 weeks, basicallyfeed them up and get them into top health.
You put a section inside the breeding tank for the female to go in, so the fish can get used to each other.
Once they start showing the signs that there ready, ie, bubble nest, lines on females belly. you put them together. Iv read loads of signs..
Then they should lay the eggs and that lot lo, then i would remove my female, and leave the male to care for the eggs. I shouldnt feed him, becuase it might trigger off his appertight and he'll eat the egg's?
Once they hatch i should remove the male, and then you care for the fry...

I have read up on it all a fair bit, and liek i said i think it sounds really intresting, and id love to see it happen first hand :)

The two betta's im getting are coming next week. Which is why i thought about ting to breed them. i woundlt do it straight away though...

I just like to ask questions, even if there nothing to do with what iv got in mind. haha

Thanks

Back to the original topic...

Heygetsmart I love your turq and red crown tail boy he is stunning, but your female's tails dont seem to suit him in colour / type I think him and a stunning crowntail girl would make amazing babies

This looks like a bad pic of this girl :

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CT-red-turq-blue-fem...A1%7C240%3A1318

but the seller notes her father was turq blue and she has been on ebay for a couple of weeks now so you might be able to get the price down? At any rate I think you should go for a CT female with turq in her genetics or a pale recessive gene girl.

Good luck :good:
