Emergency Help Needed! Oscar's Anus Is Swollen

Anus looks like a swollen jellyfish donut. Almost translucent. Hasn't eaten in 3 weeks. Has been treated with API 'General Cure' (Anti-Parasite Medication). Currently being treated with 'BiFuran+ (Bacterial & Protozoan Medication).

Volume and Frequency of water changes: 50 Gal. 1/3 Water change weekly

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank:Amquel, Nova Aqua

Tank inhabitants: 2 Algie eaters ( long time residents)

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration):None

Exposure to chemicals:None

Have you fed him peas?? coz if you havent, boil some squish them, grab his face and get them into him.. looks serious but i actually cant make the pic out

3 weeks.. wish youd found us sooner.. u test the tank? - gonna need to do that.

Tank tested, everything within limits. Not acting odd...just hanhing on the bottom, or perched on a rock. Sorry for the late request...but i've been working with him all that time. Why peas? This fish is approx: 18" long and about 5 lbs. Even sich he ain't gonna let me put peas bown his throat. I really appreciate your response. Anything else, possibly? By the way Oscar is 11 years old.

Numbers really help when posting test results. What were you feeding before he stopped eating?

Sorry, I didn't get the numbers...I took a water sample to my local fish store and they did the testing. They said everything was good. As I stated, I do a 1/3 water change every week and change filters once a month. I was feeding him frozen brine shrimp and frozen blood worms.

I would invest in some liquid test kits of your own. Not all lfs are to be trused.

A swollen anus can be constipation, dropsy, internal parasites.

Flush the fish throw with some peas.
Don't feed any other foods for a few days.


Are scales sticking out?

Signs of internal parasites are as follows.

Long stringy white poo, clear mucas poo.
Red inflamed anus, enlarged swollen anus.
Worms sticking out of the anus.
Fish will look skinny or bloated.
Sunken in belly.
Bent spine sometimes.
Sometimes fish will swim on there sides.
Sometimes the fish will flick and rub, stop eating.

50 gallon tank and you change the filter media every month?

50 gallon tank - - too small for an Oscar.

Changing the filter media every month means your tank is never cycled and your Oscar is constantly being exposed to levels of ammonia and nitrite.

I suggest you also research the Nitrogen Cycle.

Thanks Tweety, he doesn't have any of the symptoms you mentioned. here's another picture of his anus. It looks like a jellyfish donut. Would constipation cause this?

Not sure.
I had a fancy goldfish that had the samething. He was bloated though so put it down to that.
it could be any of these things, constipation, dropsy, bacterial, internal parasites.

Have the peas helped.
What colour is his waste when he goes to the toilet.
is he bloated.
Check for red streaking on body and fins.

Hi Tweety, He hasn't eaten or pooped in 6 weeks... He doesn't seem to have lost weight. He is losing color though. His anus 'Donut' has deflated, but he's still not eating. Although I've never fed him 'Feeder Fish'....I put some in his tank to see if his instincts would kick in, but de doesn't seem interested. I probably should put him down, but I havent found what I consider acceptable yet. He's still right side up and acknowledges me...so until that changes I guess he still stays.
