Emergancy Kit For Tanks

I don't know if anyone has made a similar thread but thought that one would be handy. So here goes and if anyone else can think of things that would be needed in emergancy situations for a tank please add them.

As many battery powered airstone pumps as tanks that are kept (unless all the fish are compatible and can be moved into one large tank), extra new batteries suiting the type the air pump needs, Heavy duty blankets that can be wrapped around tanks to try and keep warmth in if power is lost during a cold spell. Extra fish food on hand if you may be cut off from shops for a while due to bad weather/ flooding. Keep your usual test kit with the emergancy kit so you can and will keep an eye on changes in water quality and if possible do water changes or add detoxifing agents.

I think there are other emergencies to prepare for too.

I think having some sort of water alarm in the stand is a good idea. Anyone have any links?

Lots of towels and buckets. A shop vac would also be good to have if things went bad.

There are air pumps with built in battery backups that automatically keep running if the power goes out.

The best thing to have is a generator. All the battery air pumps I have seen running were pretty weak, and battery backups usually only last a number of hours at best, not days.

I have battery airpumps that run on 2 D batteries and they tend to last at least 2-3 days running nonstop. But I have only ever been able to find them in bait and tackle shops.

I like to keep a spare heater and hob filter in case of a malfunction and can't make it to the store or just don't have the extra money at that time.

What happens if you need to do water changes with cold water and can't heat the water up? That will just drop the temp really quickly. Water is coming out of my tap at bout 5 degrees c at the mo. I guess a cheap genny off eBay is the way to go. Cheaper than losing 200 quids worth of African cichlids.

You could use a BBQ with a BBQ kettle on it to warm up water, you can get some pretty small gas fired BBQ's I think they call them patio BBQ's.

I always have ick Medicine on hand, the faster you treat the better results you have. Also I always when ever I see a storm coming that could knock out power I turn the heat in the tank up a little (not enough to harm the fish), then I do a water change. Also if I do lose power I rap my dank in blankets to try and keep the tank warmish.
