Kinda been reading stickys and all and see a 29 gallon tank isn't the best for mbuna cichlids since it's only 30" long but... Would 3-4 electric yellow labs with a bristle nose pleco be ok. Filtration is penguin bio-wheel 200. Know about the substrate and hiding along with lighting but not sure on compatibility....are there any other non-cichlid fish that would be ok with the yellow labs or what other cichlids or is the tank just not big enough :dunno:

Hope you guys can help thanks

p.s. by the way this is for my aunt, she's trying to figure out what she can have so she doesn't do something stupid.

IMO the tanks not big enough for any Mbuna but certainly not labs, which get quite large by Mbuna standards - sorry.

The tank size would be much better suited to a pair of Kribs or some of the dwarf New World species like Rams and Apisto's.

I have seen two full grown very healthy for about 3 years electric yellows in a 20 gallon tank and they have always been in there, so it can work out.

There is a big difference between it appearing to work and providing the correct environment for your fish. A 20 gal is no place for yellow labs - simply not fair for these active fish to live in such cramped condidtions.

No I wouldnt go for Mbuna in such a small tank, even the dwarf species wouldnt be very happy.

Why not a good group of shell dwellers.

Shell dwellers might work, they can get around 4" or so right? any special requirements besides multiple shells for them to hide in?

hi, no mbuna should be kept in anything less then 40 gallons, but a few dwarf cichlids would look really nice in a 20-30 gallon, i would probably go for 3 key holes (my favorite!), 2 bolivian rams, and maybe a a school of harlequin rasboras maybe 6-8 of them, enless personaly i think that would be absolutly killer as far as 20 gallons go, and if it is a 29 gallon, maybe gor for 1 or 2 more keyholes, and more tetras or rasboras, thats deffenitly what im doing with the 29 gallon im getting in about a week!
