OK, so i've been thinking long and hard about EBJD's over the past few weeks, and as there are some excellent ones in my local MA atm, I thought i'd prepare to make my move on one of them

The one problem I have is that the member of staff I spoke to said that the electric blue JD's rarely live past 3 years!! Can that be true?!?! I don't want to pay £50 for a fish that I adore, only to have him/her snuff it after 3 years... :(

Can you guys help me out and put my mind at rest? He'd have his own tank with double filtration, and would feed a variety of live, frozen and the normal cichlid-style pellet food.

3 years isn't very long

my local maidenhead aquatics has them for £25 i just got one, they are quite small though. Not sure how long they live but though it would be longer than 3 years.
regards Angel

^Was that an electric blue JD you got?? Why does my MA sell them for £48 when yours is half that?! stupid london.

The one i've fallen in love with is about 4inches I suppose.

this is mine, i think the prices must vary, got him from bourne end maidenhead aquatics he's about 2.5", got loads of character, so pleased i got him.

I have googled and found someone asking the same question, the reply was from a avid jack dempsey keeper and he said he has kept a electric for +10yrs himself so good to go sounds like maybe it's a mif, much like everyone was saying channa ornatipinnis were mouth brooders for a fact but that was just a mif started by the internet....

it is rubbish they live longer than 3 years they are the same as normal jack dempseys in terms of lifespan and all this about them being finecky of water isnt so true either ok they may be a little more sensitive than normal JD's but they are still near bulletproof if water conditions are kept right i have had mine for a couple of month now and not one problem i do 10-15% water change a week but then again i have the juwel filter and a fluval U2 going and £48-50 is a bit steep for one i shud of payed £25 for mine but my pal gave me it for free when he got his delivery as he knows i have wanted one for ages they also are fast growes i got mine when it was 1.5" and its easy 2.5" now

Thanks for all your replies :) put my mind at rest now and can happily go JD shopping soon :D
