Hi all, just wondered if anyone can help. I'm planning on setting up a tank to keep some small koi in, just to watch them grow before I put in my pond. I recently aquired a eheim pro2. My question is this, is there supposed to be some kind of O ring between the pump head and cannister also it came with no media so was wondering if I could use some of my K1 media or sponge/ jap matting from my koi filters or is it essential to use eheim's own stuff

Yes, there is supposed to be an )-ring around the motor head, this is what makes is hold water without leaking :good: check around the hose connector, where that joins the filter head for seals also, there should be some :nod:

Any media will usually work in any filter, if it fits and cannot have the water flow around it.

Don't forget that Koi grow fast, so will either need a huge tank (well, 4X2X2 or bigger, not that huge) to make it until next spring/summer, or they will need to be out in the pond by late August/early September to be capable of "over-wintering" :good:

You -may- find that the O-ring on the Pro II models is very well hidden. It may be a black O-ring squeezed deeply inside a thin channel. This part of the pump head may be black so the O-ring could be hard to see.

I would also, strongly, suggest you use Eheim filter media. first off the substrate or substrate pro, have a rep as some of the best bio media around. its also the best way to ensure correct flow speed for the filter. depending on the filter you have, it should cost about £15-25 for a full set. well worth the money.
 
hey boboboy, do you do maintenance on your impeller and shaft on your eheims? If so, what do you do?

Ahh, sorry no. its only been running for 18 months. and as i clean only twice a year (2 filter system) i aint bin there yet! I guess, perhaps, next time i will.

yeah, that's ok. I just have this curiosity thing in the back of my head about optimal maintenance on these things and been meaning to ask over in the hardware section for a while. Just have no idea whether people who have eheims actually pull the shaft out and do anything or if they only need to clean off the impeller in place and and its little well area... its no real rush for me either really
 
Eheim maintenance will be the same as with any other External. Each clean, pull the impeller out of the well, with the shaft and bearings. Clean the impeller, shaft and bearings with a sponge and cotton ear buds :good: Next up, check for signs of wear, damage or signs of anything un-usual. Finish off by cleaning out the impeller well thoroughly.

Dirt puts centrifugal force on the impeller, that can wear it or it's shaft out faster than it would be worn out when clean, so it is important to clean the impeller with each filter clean to ensure longevity of that component. Without cleaning the bearings, it's hard to see if they are degrading and in need of replacement, they are rubber in constant contact with water like the seals after all, and failed bearings can do all sorts of damage to the impeller and shaft. The shaft when dirty can inhibit the correct spinning of the impeller. The Impeller well needs to be clean though, as this is where the majority of heat from the motor is dissipated. Heat is a big killer of anything electrical, so allowing dirt to build up in the well may well lead to shortened motor life :nod:

So the impeller is somehow attached to a metal shaft and I can see a tiny white clip on the metal shaft. I assume there may be some sort of larger black magnet or something lower down on the shaft. Do you just pull the entire impeller, shaft and magnet object as a whole upward and out against magnetic pressure or are there clips one should be worried about. I've always been both too timid to try it for fear of breaking it and at the same time too lazy to contact eheim and find out the right procedure since mine is still pretty new and I've not worried about it much yet but have just cleaned the impeller and the "wide portion" of the well where the blades spin, so have kept it pretty clean I thought. When you talk about cleaning the well, is the just the shallow well around the impeller blades or are you also referring to the deep well that obviously down the center of the motor?

there is nothing holding the impeller in place, except magnetism, on the drive shaft anyway. though the small top casing does the job on reassembly. and yes, the whole thing comes out in one unit. don't be frightened. people like to make this sort of this an "expert" job, or in some way complicated. its not. pop the small top case off and pull it out. as the Meerkat would say "Simples".
 
Just pull it out straight, their is a ceramic pice in the middle and if you break this is has to be replaces as it hods the magnet perfectly in the middle.

and clean as already discribed.

It's easy.
