I hope i've put this in the right section, first of all.

Anyway, with my 52 gal tank I got an Eheim Classic 2213 canister model. However, I happen to be a total novice with canisters and I am just wondering, does this set up of hoses/tap thingies look okay? Im not sure how to do a test run at this stage. I tried putting both intake and spray bar (Piece of hose) end into a bucket and turn on, but to no avail. Then filled up the filter and still nothing.

Anyway, here is how the filter was set up from the previous owners

They've added a section of garden hose, as you can see

Here's the spray bar end, this piece of pipe has no holes or end piece, so just an outflow? Not sure what it actually is... Would you recommend that I replace it with the original spray bar, or would I be better to leave it?

I also have two of these spare, what are they used for?

And most importantly: How do I start this up for a test run?

Sorry for all the questions! Thanks in advance to any advice and answers

Before you turn the filter on,

Ensure the rubber o ring on the lid is covered in Vaseline to stop air getting into the system.

make sure the canister and both hoses are filled with water to minimise air locks

You can use the tap connectors on the inlet and outlet of the canister for ease of removing and cleaning of pipes but beware!!., they can sometimes leak...

Hope this helps;).. Any further questions please pm me!

Ooh thanks so much! Good to learn this stuff :)

I would shorten the length of the hoses,on my 2213 i have the hoses so that the inlet & spray bars have just a little bit of free way between them and the tank, they say longer hoses can cause air probs ;) i had that problem when i had long hoses etc, hope this helps :)

These are your shut off valves, you need these to stop the water flowing when you clean out the filter, two on each pipe, those in the picture are in the off (no water flowing) position, if they were like this when you tested it that would be why no water flowed.

Oh thanks, that probably was why it wasn't working. Would I need to install shut off valves in the outlet hose? Thanks

I'll have to see where this filter's going to go, it may have to go on the floor, so I might need longer hose. I will try to make them as  short as possible.

just thought i would help you in showing the valves, new isnt that expensive, what size of tank are you running it on?

Yes you need two valves on each pipe, one closes the water from the tank, the other from the filter. This keeps all the water in the pipes so you can unclip them to do filter maintenance without getting soaked :)

Got a 53 gal tank that it will be running on, just testing the canister now and so far it's really nice and quiet. I will buy new piping, and put valves in each outlet. Than you guys so much for the help :)

They are a good quiet canister never had much probs with mine, just getting it primed was a pain for me lol good luck with your tank and fish ;)

I bought mine about a year ago and spent an hour looking at all the bits and pieces, I found You tube was a tremendous help, just seeing how someone else had done it and talked through each bit was a huge help.

Somebody had told me how to set it up, but it all went over my head until I had all the bits in my hand and just had somebody walk me through it online!

FWIW +1 on it being a good quiet filter. I had a rattling noise for a while but after changing the impellor this was gone. I put this down to getting sand in the intake from my substrate so raised it up an inch and make sure its turned off for water changing and no problems since.

I did manage to get it going after creating a waterfall onto the carpet. It is quiet, currently running on my 17g to cycle it... Doing a better job at cleaning the sand than my built in filter ever edid. Love it.

We all get the waterfalls from externals lol my new filter was bad for it,i have wrecked the wooden floor in our living room its has all bubbles over it near the tank,my fault,i should of had the filter in the kitchen sink lol we learn by or mistakes,if you have any probs with your filter goto youtube search there and if your still stuck the guys on here will sort it out.
