hi everyone, i've decided i wanted to have a go at breeding some kind of fish, i know most of you will probably suggest something like platys or guppies (i've not even bread these fish though! although i once had 2 female platys, never kept guppies dont like them) preferably i would like to try breeding some kind of fish, i've heard that there are some corys that are quite easy to breed, but i know most of the time whatever fish it is the water parameters have to be exactly to there preferred requirements, id like to be able to breed a fish without going through the trouble of trying to alter my water parameters. so my water has a ph of 7.6 and the water is also slightly hard, so can anybody suggest fish that i might be able to breed within this Ph. ?

thankyou :D x

convicts are easy, or are platies mollies and guppies, i have never had livebearers before or convicts (i have only had males). i don;t know about cories but i heard they can be easy with the right conditions. i also heard that bristlenose plecos are easy and breed like guppies with the right conditions

rams are easy to breed too in most conditions lol. They just get a bit aggressive/protective over the eggs and bring them up well too :)

I've heard kribs are easy too, just very protective/ aggressive as well.

One thing you need to consider before you breed anything is; how are you going to get rid of the fry?

Yes things like convicts and kribs are easy to breed, but it can be very difficult to get rid of the fry; very few places or people want a couple of hundred, aggressive ciclids.

Dwarf cichlids, like apistogrammas have a fairly good market, especially if you go for one of the less common species; same with corydoras.

oh sorry i forgot to mention i've only got a 64litre to work with :p but thankyou for all the suggestions :)

You could try swordtails, there livebearers and very easy to breed

With a 64 litre tank you can't really breed even small fish even if you manage to keep the fry from not getting eaten by the adults. You'll be overrun in a month time. I would suggest a cherry shrimp tank , or any shrimp from the neocaridina heteropoda species as they'll do fine in your hard water.

my peppered corys fertalise and lay eggs every month with out fail
and my leopard danios every couple of weeks
ive not made any changes to my water at all so i would say they are pretty easy to breed
if u want eggs. only thing i do tend to do is when i see the corys T'ing (fertalising the eggs)
or the danios laying eggs, i put the adult fish in a nursing tank so they can lay their eggs
without the risk of my other fish eating them

Corys are easy to breed but their young are not so easy to raise and it will take 4-6 months before you can give them away or sell them. If the adults are in the 64 litre tank where would you raise the corys for such long time?

You can try endler guppies or pygmy corys(they many not eat all fry so can be raised with the adults and are small), or shrimp as I suggested earlier.

hmm i do like pygmy corys :), would i be able to raise the fry in the same tank or would they end up being eaten do you think ? thanks for the suggestions anyway, if all else fails i might just buy a few cherry shrimp as i hear they are quite easy to breed

Doesnt just have to be cherry shrimp!! Loads of those smaller shrimp have a much higher value and are equally as easy to breed! (ie. give them a tank, water and hiding places and let them get on with it!).

If you want a proper breeding project, you will need another tank for growing on babies because the adults will nearly always end up eating their young.

That said... could be fun to breed an egg scattering species! Fill the tank with marbles at the bottom instead of gravel and watch them spawn and the eggs will be protected enough to hatch. Though you will have to remove the babies before they get eaten!

Could be fun breeding tetras, barbs or danios etc! Doesnt have to be common like zebra danios, could go for the kyathit danios for a bit more interest or rhombo barbs or cherry barbs or White Fin Bentosi Tetras are fun :)
