Hiya all,

Well basically, Columnaris is something I hadnt really heard much about until I started coming on this forum, but one thing I have yet to read is any recommendations of easy to find over the counter meds here in the UK, I've seen lots of suggestions of Tetracycline but I'm not sure where people would buy this in the UK?

Basically if I'm to help people with their fish the best I can I need to know what I have available to me to recommend they use? Just a curiosity question :)

P.S:Really sorry wrong section! :*)

Hi Saedcantas :)

Columnaris flexibacter is just one of a number of bacterial infections a fish can get. Without being able to do the tests necessary to make an accurate determination of just what strain of bacteria has infected a fish, it's best to treat them with a more general medication, one that is effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

Also, please be aware that once a bacterial infection sets in, it's quite possible for a fish to develop a secondary infection too. A broad spectrum medication that cures both kinds of bacteria will help with this.

In the UK, good brands to use for this purpose are Waterlife's Myxazin and Interpet's Anti Finrot and Fungus Medicine. I understand King British also puts out a good product too. Just like when using antibiotics, if one doesn't work after a full course of treatment, clear it from the tank with water changes and carbon and try another. :D

Thanks for that Inchworm :)

The waterlife site recommends Myxazin for it also, I was simply curious to hear some experiences perhaps, Myxazin would always be my first port of call for what appears to be a general fungal infection of some kind with them more usually being bacterial than actually saphrophytic.

I always aim to give the best advice to my customers that I can and it can sometimes get confusing for me when antibiotics which may not be available to us here are the only treatments mentioned. It's always nice to have online sources to give more than one outlook on anything :)
