Dying By The Day

DONT BOIL WATER before putting it in the tank.. UTTER waste of time & in fact I heard reports that actually using boiled water is not a good idea...

Boiled water has little oxygen in it.

Boiled water has no buffering capacity as the calcium which forms the buffers has been 'boiled' out. Over time it could lead to low KH levels in the tank and eventual pH crash.

Also remember something about fish getting the bends (yep, same kind of thing divers get)... but that's probably utter nonsense?

^ I am repeating that lot parrot-fashion with no understanding of wether those claims are accurate.... make your own research.

The only time I use boiled water is to bring the temperature of the tap water up a bit when doing a water change. My hot water is stored in a tank in the airing cupboard and as I have shrimps and snails, I don't want to risk any copper getting into my tank. If you have a combi boiler (ie no storage tank) or are in the US you can use hot water straight from the tap to make the water warmer.

Here are a few pics I took earlier, I have since done a 25% water change. It's the orange ones I am worried about as they seem to have white spot, but you can't really see from the pics, although they do seem to be hanging around the top of the tank. Currently 4 neons, 3 orange tetras and the one with the bushy tail
