Hello all. I was hoping to get some advice about starting my second tank and putting a dwarf puffer in it. Essentially this will be a gift for my mother that I will take care of and she just gets to enjoy. I was looking for a less ordinary tank and came up with this one in my search:

My link

Will the 10 be enough. Placing the dimensions into the calculator it is about 14 us gallons and 54 litres.

Also I have read that they need dense vegetation. What would be a good substrate for the puffers and the plants? Also what kinds of plants are best.

Should I try to have the tank as planted as possible before adding the puffer?

If you have other suggestions or experiences please share! I just want this to be a good gift and a healthy tank.

-Thank you so much.

Hi Kat, welcome to the forum. The tank size is ideal, you could even have a pair.

You can choose any substrate you wish. It is not important to the smaller Puffers really as they're pretty active free swimmers rather than a species that like to bury themselves in sand etc. If you choose easy to care for plants such as Anubias, Java Fern and Cryptocorynes then you would be able to create a haven for it/them. Try to include plenty of wood in there and attempt to create tunnels, pathways and hidey holes for them to explore.

Plant the tank before they're added so that once they're in the tank they haven't got someone messing about with their home.

Have a look HERE for more information. :)

Good luck! :D

Thank you so much! I actually went to my favorite fish store and they had Figure Eight Puffers. So I might get those. :D

They're brackish water fish, please don't keep them in fresh water no matter what you read. They would also need a larger tank than the one you have planned.

Oh dear. Well I knew they were brackish but the way he was talking about them I though they could be kept in that tank. I will ask if they can order freshwater dwarf puffers specifically.

Thank you. :good:
