Dwarf Puffer And Nano Tank

similar to mine as well. :look:

my puffer cost £1.90 :fun:

Very interesting to know how this all turns out as im thinking of doing the same thing with mine, DP and ottos, im thinking of getting a mini external filter as well. I was going to have a colony of cherry shrimp but when i saw the DPs at the lfs the other day i fell in love with them. Do you feed it snails at all? I imagine you give it bloodworm and stuff?

DPs can sometime eat shrimp so be careful :)

Snails will be fed to him eventually as you need to, to make sure there teeth dont get to big. I will be feeding it bloodworm but need to learn and find out the best method of doing so first :)

There are giant otos, but they max out at 2 inches. Normal sized otos get around 1 to 1.5 inches. I suppose 2 inches is big enough to consider them as giants

Lovely tank and puffer! It's so tiny!!!! :hyper:

It is extremely small. Was hard to spot in the pet store as they had it in with other fish, but they are so cute :D

Tank looks great and I love your little Puffer.
Makes me sad as well though, I had to take my 6 back to the lfs last week.
I brought them as a community fish and had them with my tetras, harlequins etc, then found out they are not a community fish at all. They had been in the tank for about 3 months with no problems then noticed bits of fin missing on most of my fish.
Took them back to the lfs and found they were still selling them as community fish. I had a word with the chap we usually deal with and he's not happy about it either. His new boss, who's meant to be an "expert" on Puffers, still thinks they are fine as community fish.
They really are beautiful fish and I was sorry to see them go.

Sorry to hear that stang1. Hope in the future you can set yourself up a species only tank

I certainly plan to! I can't at the moment as we're setting up a couple of other tanks but hopefully will be able to get one in a few months. I know they are nippy little beggars but they just look so cute. It broke my heart getting rid of them but someone snapped them up from my lfs the next day!
Congratulations on getting a great picture as well, never did manage to get one of mine!!!

Great tank, I was begining to doubt buying mine next week but seeing urs has sealed the deal, deffo gonna get 4 for my 20gal now.

i love it, and your plec! (it is a type of plec right?) and i like your tank, it's nice looking!

they had some that small at petsmart, it was after my bigger one died from amonia so i decided to get a few small ones, after i cycled the tank for about 4-5 weeks.

mine happen to be bought at the same time 2 of my tanks got a white fungus, all three, plus some guppies, died.

Nice tank and fish... :)

I am too new to puffer. I first saw it in one of my LFS, a yellow colour dwarf puffer with black spots on its body. I love it on the spot, but dare not buy it as I know nothing about it...

Today I went to the LFS again and there is another type of dwarf puffer and they are so cute...

After reading this thread, I feel like want to set up a nano tank with this fish.

Can different type of dwarf puffers live together in the same tank?

What they eat?

Sorry for hijacking... :)

Dont really like shopping for fish in Pets at Home. Only originally when in for plants as there own branded plants are generally algae free (tropica ones arent though).
It's worth mentioning that algae on plants is no fault of Tropica, whether or not that was your insinuation.

They arrive at shops in A1 condition, unfortunately not many shops have the appropriate hardware in their holding tanks to keep them healthy (suffering plants are algae magnets)....

I suspect the shop's own branded plants have a much higher turnover (they're cheaper), and this would explain why they're "generally algae free".

Nice fish BTW. :)

Thanks George and i know it wouldnt be Tropica's fault. I have in the past and even in this tank (the wendtii plant on the far left) is a tropica plant which i managed to get from their in A1 condition. But most the time they are unsuitable to be used and have started to die etc, but like i said i dont blame tropica i blame the store :)

Puffers eat live foods such as bloodworm and blackworm and can also feed them defrosted frozen foods. Puffers dont eat flake foods or anything not alive.

Im not sure abotu keeping types together as i didnt reasearch that option as it wasnt what i wished to do so sorry i cant be of help there.

Thank you and the fish you are refering to are called Oto's. There is more information abotu them on this board somewhere.

A really impressive tank. I can't wait for another full tank shot, your planting is really impressive, and I think you've used the space well in your tank.

Thank you,

Im odering some more plants soon to go in the tank. Once the tanks plants have settled and im happy with it i will get a much better tank shot. Will probably cover the filter with some vallis an i think some onion plants will be to big for the tank.

Il be ordering more hairgrass and removing the sagitaria in there as its not doing to good after moving some of it from over growth in my tropical tank.
