Can a male gourami be safely kept with a female? Can males be kept with other males, or will they be territorial?

This is kind of out of context, but can gouramis be interbred with bettas?

I have had no problems with both in my 45 gallon tank. this might be a fluke, though. However, if it isn't, a couple of hiding places and lots of plants would be ok.

I highly doubt the last part could happen. They are a different genus and species, I believe. Either way, I am not 100% on that.

You should be able to keep a male with a female or two. Males may sometimes show aggression towards each other but, as mentioned, this can be avoided with plenty of hiding places and floating plants. Just make sure you don't have too many males in a tank or they will fight for territory.

I know bettas and dwarf gouramies can't interbreed (neither can bettas and trichogaster species or other gouramies).

However, I wonder whether trichogaster leeri and trichogaster trichopterus can... I have often kept these two species together but they have never bred with the other species from what I know. I wonder whether they would if kept as only a male t. leeri and female t. trichopterus? I know this is somewhat off-topic but I'm curious :p
