I got a really nice male fire red dwarf gourami today. He seemed to be fitting in really well with the 8 red flame tetras and male honey gourami in my tank.
However when it came to feeding time, he seemed to shy away from the food, which then got snapped up by one of the tetras. I heard that these fish are naturally shy but he seems to be getting along fine when not being fed and hasn't been bothered by any fish.

Is he not eating because he is new? My honey gourami was fine when i got him.
Any suggestions on how to get him to eat?

Thanks! :good:

He is likely to be a little put off by the feeding frenzie for the first few times. In the LFS and the breeders facilities, they would get fed arround 3 times a day, and more than they can eat. In these conditions they do not need to compete for food. The compertition in a community tank is new to the newcommer, and it will take him a while to get used to things. When he gets hungry enough, he will go for his share.

Keep an eye on your male gourami as well, trichogaster chuna and colisa lalia will fight together more often than not.....
What size is the tank?

What size is the tank?

70l - about 18.4 U.S gallons
They seem to be getting on well, haven't seen them even attempt to nip at eachother.

You won't have..... yet.
It has only been a day or two since it was added.
IME the Dwarf will chase the honey, the Honey is unlikely to go after the Dwarf because of the size difference, give the Dwarf time to settle and gain confidence before you jump to any conclusions.
I had almost exactly the same set up, 17 gal, Honeys in the tank for about 3 months, before adding a female Dwarf. Needless to say the female Dwarf was returned to the LFS after about a month and a half, due to her constantly harrasing my Honeys.
Then again you can never accurately predict the behaviour of an individual fish.
I hope they don't get scrappy and all goes well :good:

The last guy is right you will find it extremely difficult to keep two males and the little red one is extremely difficult as I have experienced. They look angelic fish but I would seriously ask in the gouramis section I think Sylvia is one expert that would tell you the ratios. male to female and what you can do with your tank size.

Sorry but I would seperate these two or face the consequence that the red will die.

Oy TQ!
When did you last see Sylvia? As far as i can tell she has dissapeared :dunno:
Much missed imo. Any info on her whereabouts (i'm not a stalker, quite) ?

Oh dear I have not been on Gouramis for a while as I have only the one who is the boss of the tank and have not dared to get any more as they are so difficult fish imo . I must admit I like a peaceful tank.

So Sylvia has not been around maybe some of the others will be keen to tick me off as she was one I remembered to be so enthiastic about Gouramis and was really good at knowing how to make them happy.

I will state that no-one in my opinion is expert as we all learn even those that think they know it all cannot know everything as the ocean is too deep but hey it is good to learn.

The red will die?
If anything the honey seems way more timid than the red. But i will keep an eye on them. I've added some more plants as well.
Would adding females make it better or worse? and if i do add females, should i add honeys or dwarfs? - I don't really have room for four more fish, i've heard it's best with one male to two females

Thanks

I think the lady was reffering to the honey when using; 'the red'.
You'd be best of getting rid of the dwarf and getting two female chuna in her place.
Has anyone mentioned all the health issues associated with Dwarf Gourami to you?

Ok then.
LFS never has females thougfh - pity
Yes I am aware of the risks, but the fish shop is very reliable and all in the tank were perfectly healthy.
He seems really active ( not agressive though) -_-

Oh the stress lol

oh and btw what i was really asking about the females was would adding two female dwarfs lessen his agression in the long run?

Bad news everyone :(

Dwarf Gourami is going back to the shop, charged with harrassment :(
He even went after the tetras!

Feel free to say "I told you so"

So any ideas on compatible tank mates for the rest of the fish
I don't want mollies, guppies or platies

Was thinking maybe about panda corys?

I am glad your taking the red back and maybe a few tetras would have been lost but in my experience I still think the red would soon be dead if you had not taken him back. That was my experience of them anyway I salmost felt they were stroppy fighting fish and eventually lost. I do have one Golden Gouramis that I have but never liked either they are bosses of the community remind me of the bad old woman in the street.

I am notorious for thinking that fish have characters.

My barbs were like fish wives gossiping to each other all the time never really relaxed.

The best fish are Plecs they are so peaceful I just wish they did not grow to the size they do.
